Oxford Dictionaries

Used by

Edge Browser

  • Edge, like Google, uses a built-in dictionary feature that allows users to quickly find definitions of words.

  • The definitions and word information are sourced from Oxford Dictionaries.

  • To look up a word's definition, simply double left-click on the word, then click on either "Ask Copilot" or "Search" from the pop-up menu.

  • The Oxford Dictionaries are available in more than 50 languages.

  • Oxford Dictionaries can be accessed from any one of the 14 Flag Languages and the text read aloud in any one of these languages.

  • The Read Aloud feature highlights each line in light blue while words appear in yellow as they are read by a choice of TTS voices.

  • Depending on the nature of the word, the initial entries may be either text or images.

  • After the initial entries, users can often click on other authoritative dictionaries like Merriam-Webster, or encyclopedias like Britannica.

  • Because definitions open on the Web, strict parental supervision is necessary when teaching young children.

One day a shepherd discovered a fat Pig wandering in the meadow where his Sheep were grazing. He quickly attempted to catch it. But the porker squealed the moment the Shepherd came towards it. And when the Shepherd laid hands on it, it squealed so loud you would have thought that the Pig was being butchered alive.

  • After a story or a paragraph like the one above has been accessed, a relative link may be selected, then translated into scores of languages. The transcription is shown side-by-side English text, which may be read aloud.

The example below is taken from the Encyclopedia Britannica and translated into Irish. (More about this feature under Google Translate.)
